In 2013, Ellie's 82-year-old Dad took his own life following a period of physical and mental health decline. Since this tragic loss she has been involved in many roles and projects in suicide bereavement support and prevention - she is the founder and CEO of Beside Yourself CIC, is a trained volunteer peer support group facilitator for Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide - SOBS, is the co-founder of Voices - People with Living Experience of Suicide, is a non-executive director of the Luna Foundation, is a suicide first aid trainer, and is a proud participant of the Orange Button Community Scheme.
We talk with Ellie about suicide amongst older people, including the reasons why many are dying this way and why there isn't more focus on suicide in older adults. We also explore the extremely sensitive subject of Voluntary Assisted Dying, including the distinction between this and Assisted Suicide and the legal implications of helping someone you care about in either of these situations.
