A staunch advocate for soil health and its importance in food quality, Greg shares his journey of transitioning from a career in physics and computer science to agriculture and farming, fuelled by an ardent passion for high-quality foods and a healthier lifestyle.
On his farm, Gregg has spent over a decade promoting soil health to improve food taste, nutrient content, and shelf life. In this illuminating discussion, we delve into the declining nutritional value of food owing to decades-long deterioration in soil health. Greg offers insights into how economic pressures and unsustainable farming practices like excessive plowing and imbalanced nutrient restoration contribute significantly to this decline.
Dive into this engaging episode as we discuss food, farming, nutrition, health, and the complexities and realities of organic farming with Gregg.
We discuss the multiple factors impacting soil quality and, consequently, our food's nutrition. Gregg voices his concerns over the rushed and cost-effective farming methods leading to a demise in soil health and nutrient availability, further affecting our food and overall health quality.
Learn how to identify authentic organic food amid clever marketing play and dig into a discussion about whether the higher cost of organic produce is reasonable or not. Greg suggests growing our own food and being familiar with local farms to better understand what goes into the food we consume. We also talk about Gregg's resource for understanding produce's nutritional values with key questions to ask food growers.
Emphasising nutrient-dense foods' significance in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, we conclude our discussion with an invaluable piece of advice – just because food looks healthy doesn't mean it truly is.
